Being aware of what your travel rights are can make a huge difference. How to be protected without flights.If your trip does not require flights you will not be able to benefit from the ATOL scheme protection, but you will be able to apply for Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tour Regulations programs. A wise thing to do is make some research and get familiar with your travel rights. 4. Who offers coverage when buying a package from the travel agent.The difference between a tour operator and a travel agent is this. The tour operators make the holidays while the travel agents sell the holiday packages. It is more important to know who your tour operator is rather than focussing on the travel agent. Sometimes, travel agents offer their own packages but with separate flights, hotel deals and transfers but these are not real packages and are not always ATOL protected. Knowing you travel rights when purchasing one of these packages can make a big difference. You have to make sure you are protected.
5. How much time before you receive compensation.Usualy it takes a couple of months until you get your money back if you are protected through the ATOL scheme. If the tour operator goes bust while you are in a trip things can become really difficult really fast. Having a spare travel insurance policy can make things easier and offer protection where the CAA could not. Is it worth purchasing more travel insurance ?Travel insurance will provide protection against a much wider range of accidents, not only tour operator bankruptcy. Compensation if you payed via credit card.In case you have payed for your trip with a credit card that is not protected by ATOL you can still receive compensation unde section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. In this case, credit card firms are liable if something goes wrong. This type of protection has nothing to do with travel rights because it is a legal protection guaranteed by the credit card firm. 8. Booking hotel and car insurance separately.The ATOL scheme will provide protection for components that are part of the trip package but it will not cover services that are not part of the package. For example if your flight is part of the package but the hotel is not, you will not receive compensation from the hotel if you did not make it. However you might be able to cancel your stay and get your money back, but that depends on the hotel manager. Travel insurance will provide protection against situations like this. The best thing you can do to be safe while travelling is to know your travel rights and get extra travel insurance if you feel you do not have enough coverage.
