Expanding the Atol scheme.

The Atol scheme was meant to provide protection for travellers in case the travel company suffers bankrupcy.

Having your tour company go bust can leave you out of coverage when they not even left for their trip, they can be left without resourses if they are already at their destination. The Atol scheme provides protection for travellers that happen to be in these types of situations.
Last year, 43.637 travellers were repatriated through the Atol scheme, and 132.820 were refounded when their travel operator went intro bankruptcy.
The Atol scheme had a hard time in the last years due to a large number of travel operators suffering bankruptcy in a short time, as such, the U.K. government had to support the travellers with 42 million punds.

The Atol scheme had a hard time in the last years due to a large number of travel operators suffering bankruptcy in a short time, as such, the U.K. government had to support the travellers with 42 million punds. Because of the situation of the last years, the government plans to expand the ATOL scheme, so it will provide better protections for the travellers.
The new Air Travel Organisers Licensing plans will cover flights and holidays when they are booked withing a short period of time but are not part of a package deal. Although this might be the case, holidaymakers that book hotels and air transportation from different tour companies will not benefit from the ATOL plan protection.
Travel agencies will be obligated to inform their clients if the holiday they booked is covered by Atol. Aside from this, the changes brought to the Atol scheme will also include a certificate that will state when holidays are protected by Atol, making it easier for future travellers.
These new changes brought by the U.K. government to the Air Travel Organisers Licensing plan can be aproved by the end of the year and could provide protection for an extra 6 million travellers.
