Travel insurance mistakes |
When purchasing a travel insurance policy it is always important that you read the “small print”. Although you may think that this is a hassle, most problems with travel insurance comes from misunderstadings. These misunderstandings can also cause problems when you want to file a claim. Most travel insurance related problems can be avoided by carefully reading the travel insurance policy.
2. Purchasing travel insurance when it’s too late:Travel insurance only covers unforseen events, this is the reason why the travel insurance policy has to be purchased before heading out. Some travellers wait until something happens and then buy travel insurance, but the claims filed will be denied if the accident occurred before the travel insurance policy was bought.
3. Cancelling a trip before checking with the doctor:Before you cancel a trip due to medical reasons you first have to check with your doctor and get a “stay-home”recomandation. When filing a claim for a trip cancellation due to medical reasons or ilness you will need the apropriate documentation. Those medical documents must specify that you have visited the doctor before cancelling your trip. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage is only valid if the reason for cancelling is covered in your travel insurance policy. 4. Mixing up the policy effective dates:Some travellers use the wrong dates when filing a claim. Using the wrong departure and return dates will get your claim denied. The departure date is the date you leave home to go on the trip and the return date is the day you returned from your trip. It’s as simple as that. Also a trip cancellation policiy purchased upfront will provide coverage from the moment you purchse it. Example: You leave home on a Friday but before you board your plane you spend one more day at a hotel. The departure day when filing a claim is Friday, the day you left home. 5. Mistaking an administrator with the Insurance Company:Some travellers buy travel insurance from a third party administrator and think they are buying it from the travel insurance company. The difference is that the administrator only sells and issues the policy, while the travel insurance company underwrites the risk and is responsible for the claim.
6. Misunderstanding the pre-existing condition waiver:A large number of travel insurance companies have recently included a waiver for the exclusion for pre-existing conditions if certain conditions are met. The travel insurance policy with pre-existing condition coverage will also include a look-back period. The look-back period is the number of days prior to purchasing the travel insurance that the company will look for your pre-existing condition. Depending on the travel insurance company, the look-back period can as long as 90 days. Not all pre-existing conditions are covered, and you should make sure before purchasing it. Also make sure the pre-existing condition exclusion waiver applies to the owner of the insurance or the family members. 7. Failing to save the receipts for additional puchases:If your flight gets delayed and you need to go to a hotel for the night before catching the next flight, you will have to save the receipt from the hotel and also find out why the flight got delayed before filing a claim for a trip delay situation. 8. Expecting baggage delay benefits on the return trip:Travel insurance with baggage delay coverage only provides protection for delays that occur on the the trip towards the travel destination, and not on the return trip. You will not receive the benefit if your baggage is delayed on the way back. 9. Mistaking “cancel for any reason”for “cancel at any time”:The option cancel for any reason means that the travel insurance company will provide coverage if you cancel the trip any reason, while cancel at any time means you can cancel your trip at any time but the cancellation must be due to a covered reason, or else you will not get the insurance benefit. With a cancel for any reason coverage you will be able to cancel your trip only within a certain period before departing. As long as you cancel your trip duringt this period, usualy two days, you wil be covered. Remember that some policies specify that you must cancel before 48 hours while others say 2 days. While these two statements sound the same, they are two distinct types of measurement. These are the most common travel insurance mistakes that travellers make regarding travel insurance. Remember, as long as you know what type of travel insurance best suites your travelling requirements and also read the small print on the travel insurance policy you shouldn’t have any problems.
