Single trip travel insurance is an inexpensive way for leisure and business travelers who take one or two trips abroad per year to insure themselves. Policies cover travelers for one particular trip and require the start and end date of the trip. A single trip insurance is recommended for non-frequent travelers. It is designed for people who are only going away for a single trip in a 12 month period. A single trip is usually classed as being less than 90 consecutive days. If you travel more than 3 times per year, it will usually work out cheaper to purchase an Annual multi-trip policy. A single trip travel insurance policy provides full coverage for any one-time travel anywhere around the world.

The cover under all sections starts at the beginning of your trip as shown on your insurance schedule and ends on your return home or expiry of the policy, whichever is the first. Basic single trip policies usually start at under £10 for a typical seven day holiday. Normally, a single trip travel insurance covers medical expenses, cancelation and curtailment, 24 hour emergency medical support and free of charge coverage for children aged 0 – 17 when travelling with an insured parent. However, you can upgrade your level of cover by adding on any extras such as winter sports cover, baggage cover or change the amount of excess you will pay in the event of a claim.

- The most important feature of the single-trip policy is the number of days that you will be covered for. All providers will put a maximum time limit on a single trip, and this will very rarely exceed 180 days, but is often shorter. Purchasing a policy that covers only the trip you are taking means you avoid paying for extra days that you will not be using. Single trip travel insurances can usually be arranged at the time of the booking of a trip to cover exactly the duration of that trip.
- Age limits are another factor to consider. Although age limits will usually be younger on policies offering adventure holidays or winter sports cover, age limits still apply to single-trip policies. The maximum age is usually around 65 or 70, but it can be as low as 45. There are insurance companies which don’t put age restrictions on their policies. It is usually made clear when obtaining a quote, but if in doubt you should always check.
- Most insurers will allow you to choose the exact number of days' worth of cover you need, which means that you do not pay for extra days, whilst some insurers will allow you to remove areas of cover which you consider unnecessary, and by so doing reduce your premium. Many insurers will give you the option of buying either individual cover for yourself, or group cover for your family or a group of friends.
- The amount of cover you receive varies between policies and insurance providers, but most policies will feature the same basic exclusions, such as if you take a holiday in a war-zone and are injured as a result.
When applying for a travel insurance, whether it is a single or multi trip one, the information that you will be most likely required to give refers to:
• Names of people travelling • Ages of people travelling • Date of travel • Return date of travel • Health history of people travelling • Current health conditions of people travelling • Destination • Hazardous activities
It's a good idea to leave a copy of your travel documents & insurance policy with a friend, in case you lose the documents while travelling.
