Cancer patient surprised by trip cancellation limits.
Understanding the trip cancellation details of your travel insurance can prevent unpleasant surprises, as was shown in a recent news article about a cancer patient that encountered problems with the trip cancellation.
The article shows us that the cancer patient, Nancy Crawford wanted to reschedule her family vacation due to her cancer treatments. Nancy Crawford said: “I called and let them know we couldn't make it and (asked) could they please exchange it for another time for us, and they refused”.

The resort representatives refused to reschedule her trip to October after declining to pay a $100 fee, as she thought that her travel insurance had an unlimited protection against trip cancellations. Westgate resorts rejected her reschedule because she already used her trip cancellation last October due to chemotherapy sickness. Nancy Crawford said “They told us the insurance was for if I wanted to change it,” and: “They didn't tell me it was for one time.”
Although they eventually waived the fees and rescheduled Nancy Crawford, this article raises some good points about understanding the exact coverage of your travel insurance.

An important thing to note is that most travel plans offer a 10 to 15 day review period, so you have some time to read through the policy and understand what your travel insurance covers.
Reviewing the covered reasons for trip cancellation is also an important aspect to consider. Most travel insurance plans cover trip cancellations due to illness as long as there is no pre-existing condition, but the reasons for trip cancellation can vary from plan to plan.
Remember that the travel insurance company will require proof if you wish to use the pre-trip cancellation due to a medical emergency. In order to do so, you will need to obtain written documentation from a doctor that states that you are in no condition to travel. The most important thing to note is that you have to prove that you are cancelling the trip for a covered reason.
