Budgeting for Back-Packers
|
You did a great job budgeting and saving for your trip around the world. Now, you are out there. You finally made it. Now it is time to have some fun, but be careful. The trip of a lifetime is not much fun when you spend all your money in the first few weeks. Traveling is expensive business, and with all the money going out and very little coming in, that fat bank account can dwindle to nothing very quickly.

Budgeting can help back-packers:
Establishing a budget while traveling is just as important as budgeting prior to traveling. This does not mean you must always be a spendthrift. It may be an extended one, but you are on vacation. Realize that you are going to be on vacation for a long time and plan accordingly. You should make a budget and stick to it. The budget can vary from country to country. What is required to spend in Europe might not be needed in South America. Pay attention to the exchange rate. You might want to budget for an entire week rather than a single day.

Long-term travel differs from traditional vacations. There will be days when all you do is sit in a park and read. On those days, you will spend less than on days where you go out to eat or to a show.
Keeping track of expenses is very important. Knowing on what you spend your money is a way to head off any potential problems before they become actual problems. If you notice you are spending too much in one area, you might be able to increase you savings in another. It is easy to keep track of credit or debit card purchases by checking online statements, but cash purchases should be written down. Sometimes money gets tight on the road. It is possible to pick up odd jobs if you are over your budget for the week. Hostels will often allow guests to defray the cost of their room by doing light cleaning work. It is not uncommon for long-term travelers to find farm work in some countries. This not only provides you with extra cash but also a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Do not let your companions push you into making purchases that are beyond your budget. Saying 'no' occasional is a great way to save.
If you make friends while traveling, do not be afraid to share a room on the road. Dorm-styled or double-occupancy rooms are much cheaper than single, private rooms. Great deals are found outside of the city proper. Rooms and food can be found at a discount just a few short miles outside the city center. Only take as much money as you are comfortable spending when you go out. It is easy to spend too much on a night out on the town. Alcohol lowers inhibitions, and you may feel freer with your money. Having a great time while traveling does not mean you have to spend a ton of money. You are in a foreign land. Sometimes the most interesting experiences can be enjoyed for little or nothing. There is no reason to watch every penny, but having a budget prevents you from having to cut the trip of a lifetime short.
